On February 16, 2021, 20-year-old Dequan Johnson of Montgomery, Alabama, was fatally shot while seated in his vehicle at the Home Inn and Suites on Express Drive. The assailants, identified as Marquis Lequan Phillips and J'Hance Tramatez Gillium, approached Johnson's car and discharged multiple gunshots into the vehicle during a robbery attempt. Following the shooting, Johnson's vehicle collided with the hotel building, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
