On January 4, 1968, Anchorage Police Department Patrol Officer Benjamin Franklin Strong was fatally shot during a stakeout at a Government Hill liquor store. In the days following Christmas, Anchorage experienced a series of armed robberies, prompting Officer Strong to volunteer for the stakeout on his third consecutive night, despite being off duty.
