On May 1, 2014, Trooper Gabriel "Gabe" Rich, aged 26, was fatally shot in Tanana, Alaska, while performing his duties with the Alaska State Troopers. He and Sergeant Patrick "Scott" Johnson were responding to reports of a resident brandishing a firearm during a dispute over the sale of a couch. The troopers arrived at the residence of Arvin Kangas to arrest him for the earlier incident.
