On May 1, 2014, in Tanana, Alaska, Sergeant Patrick "Scott" Johnson, aged 45, and Trooper Gabriel "Gabe" Rich, aged 26, were fatally shot while attempting to arrest Arvin Kangas, 58, for assault and driving with a revoked license. The incident began when Kangas had a confrontation with the local Village Public Safety Officer (VPSO), during which he brandished a shotgun.
