On May 1, 2014, in the Yukon River village of Tanana, Sergeant Patrick “Scott” Johnson, a 45-year-old white male with the Alaska State Troopers, was shot and killed while responding to a volatile series of events that had begun the night before. A dispute in the community had escalated when Arvin Kangas allegedly pointed a shotgun at the local Village Public Safety Officer, drawing state troopers to the area.
