On June 28, 2022, 28-year-old Daniel Ackerman was fatally shot at Taku Lake Park in Anchorage, Alaska. Ackerman was fishing with his wife and a friend when 19-year-old Teathloch J. Chan approached and asked for a cigarette. An altercation ensued, during which Chan physically assaulted Ackerman's friend. Ackerman and his friend pursued Chan into the nearby parking lot, where Chan produced a firearm and shot Ackerman, resulting in his death.
Following the shooting, Chan fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended by Anchorage Police Department officers, who found him hiding in a dumpster on King Arthur Court. He was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder.
On July 8, 2022, an Anchorage grand jury indicted Chan on multiple charges, including one count of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, one count of manslaughter, one count of tampering with physical evidence, and two counts of third-degree assault. If convicted, Chan faces up to 99 years in prison for the murder charges, 20 years for manslaughter, and additional time for the other offenses. His bail was set at $250,000 cash performance, with conditions including a court-approved third-party custodian and house arrest.
The incident was a tragic example of how a seemingly minor interaction escalated into a fatal confrontation, underscoring the unpredictable nature of violence and its profound impact on the community.
