On January 21, 1975, she was found deceased at her place of employment, a concessions stand in the 2500 block of what was then known as Jefferson Davis Highway. The grim discovery was made after she failed to return to her shift, raising concern among those who knew her. An investigation into her death determined that she had been asphyxiated.
Dorothy Townsend was a veteran of the United States Army, having served her country as a Staff Sergeant. Her death shocked the community, and the Arlington County Police Department immediately began a thorough investigation into the homicide. Despite their efforts, her killer has never been brought to justice, and the case has since gone cold.
In connection with the murder, authorities identified a suspect but no arrests were ever made. The individual was described as a Black male, estimated to be between 20 and 25 years old at the time. He was said to be between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall with a medium-to-slight build and a medium-to-light complexion. He reportedly had no facial hair, with the exception of sideburns that extended to the bottom of his ears. At the time of the incident, he was seen wearing a white knit hat, a white shirt-jacket, a brown vinyl hip-length coat, and red shoes with white stitching.
