Raul Mendoza, age 23, was found dead on March 19, 2006, in Buffalo Bayou in Houston, Texas. He had been shot twice in the head, and his body was discovered by Texas EquuSearch volunteers after Mendoza was reported missing by his family. He was last seen on March 15, 2006, involved in an altercation near his car in the 3100 block of Garrow Street, which prompted bystanders to call the police. When officers arrived, Mendoza was no longer at the scene, leading to a search that eventually located his body floating in the bayou.
The investigation into Mendoza's death eventually led to the arrest of two suspects, Jose Luis Nieva and Joseph Noel Godin. According to the investigation, Nieva and Godin were with Mendoza at the time of his disappearance, and they both admitted to being present during the incident. During questioning, Nieva claimed that it was Godin who pulled the trigger, while Godin blamed Nieva for the shooting. Despite their conflicting accounts, both men were charged with capital murder and eventually convicted. Nieva received a 40-year prison sentence, while Godin was sentenced to 45 years in prison. The case shed light on the tragic end of a young Navy veteran whose life was cut short due to senseless violence.
