Roland Darby Suiter, 85, was the victim of a fatal assault that took place on November 15, 2011, in his home on Roseland Street in Houston, Texas. The elderly man lived alone when an unknown assailant broke into his home and attacked him, causing severe blunt force trauma to his head. Suiter was transported to the hospital, where he remained under medical care for several months before ultimately passing away from his injuries on May 20, 2012. An autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was complications resulting from the assault, and his death was officially ruled a homicide.
Initially, police had limited leads regarding the case. However, in 2017, the investigation was assigned to the Houston Police Department's Cold Case Squad, which continued efforts to solve the case. A breakthrough came when DNA evidence found at Suiter's home linked Michael Anthony Cuellar, 52, to the crime. Investigators determined that Cuellar had suffered a cut during the alleged robbery, leaving behind blood at the crime scene, which eventually provided the evidence needed to identify him.
Michael Anthony Cuellar was arrested and charged with murder in June 2021, nearly a decade after the attack on Suiter. Family members of Roland Suiter expressed their relief at the resolution of the case, acknowledging the long wait for justice. Suiter’s cousin, Carlton Suiter, mentioned that the family had almost given up hope after so much time had passed, and the arrest brought much-needed closure to the relatives and friends of the victim. The arrest marked the end of an arduous chapter for the family, who had waited nearly ten years for an answer regarding the tragic death of their loved one.
