Manuel Castilleja, age 43, was found dead on March 23, 2014, outside a convenience store in San Antonio, Texas. The incident took place in the 800 block of West Russell Place, north of downtown San Antonio. Earlier that evening, Castilleja, who was reportedly intoxicated, had gone to a friend’s house and asked if he wanted to join him for a drink. The two decided to walk together to the convenience store, where Castilleja stayed outside while his friend went inside to clean windows.
Witnesses inside the store later reported hearing loud thuds coming from outside and stated that Castilleja appeared to be in an altercation with multiple people. When emergency responders arrived, they found Castilleja lying on the ground with blood running from his open mouth, which had pooled beneath his head. Despite there being visible blood, there were no apparent signs of external trauma on his body. The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office later determined that the cause of death was blunt force injuries combined with acute ethanol intoxication, ruling it a homicide.
