In 2021, Chris Roddy was charged with Burks' murder after confessing to the crime during an interrogation related to another homicide. Roddy, who was already in custody for an unrelated sexual assault, admitted that he shot Burks in what appeared to be an unprovoked attack. Following this confession, charges were formally filed against Roddy for both Burks’ homicide and another homicide that occurred in 2017. His arrest brought some closure to a case that had remained cold for years, illustrating the randomness and tragic nature of the violence.
