On June 11, 2016, Carlos Castaneda, a 23-year-old from Brownsville, Texas, was found fatally shot in southeast Houston. Authorities reported that a witness driving near the 4200 block of Mowery Street saw Castaneda lying beside his pickup truck, injured and bleeding. The witness immediately contacted paramedics, but Castaneda was pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple gunshot wounds. Castaneda had reportedly traveled to Houston for unclear reasons before the incident, though the exact motive for the attack remained unknown at the time.
Over the following months, the Houston Police Department investigated the case, ultimately identifying Vincent Mclendon, 28, as the primary suspect. Mclendon was apprehended without incident nearly a year later in May 2017, and he was subsequently charged with murder.
