On January 30, 2017, Pablo Garcia-Vasquez, age 43, was killed in Houston, Texas. The incident occurred at the Marq-E Entertainment Center, located along the Katy Freeway. On the day of the murder, Garcia-Vasquez and his daughter were leaving Dave and Buster's when they were approached by Nicholas Thomas, who was armed. Thomas placed Garcia-Vasquez in a chokehold, demanded his watch, and then shot him before fleeing the scene. The suspect was eventually arrested when an accidental shooting involving his toddler linked the same firearm to the crime scene. Ballistic testing and other forensic evidence, including fingerprints and DNA, corroborated Thomas's involvement. He was subsequently convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole for his role in the crime.
Garcia-Vasquez’s tragic death gained media attention due to the circumstances of the arrest, where the accidental shooting of Thomas’s toddler provided crucial evidence for solving the case. Forensic investigators matched the gun used in both incidents through a national ballistics database (NIBIN), which eventually led to Thomas’s arrest.
