Byiringiro Mupenzi, a 25-year-old Congolese refugee, was found dead on May 30, 2017, in the parking lot of his apartment complex in Houston, Texas. He was discovered naked and suffered severe lacerations, leading authorities to believe he was decapitated. Mupenzi had fled the Democratic Republic of Congo during the civil war and had been living in Houston for four years. He was last seen alive by his best friend on the evening of May 28, 2017, when they went shopping together.
Mupenzi was supposed to meet his friend at a graduation party but never showed up.
The Houston Police Department launched an investigation into Mupenzi's death but has not identified any suspects or witnesses. The family, including his older brother Nganizi Kayishema, is still waiting for answers from the police investigation. Mupenzi's brother described him as a caring individual who worked for Goodman Manufacturing Company and aspired to further his education in construction or engineering.
Despite the ongoing investigation, no arrests have been made, and the case remains unsolved. The HPD Homicide Division and the Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene, but the lack of witnesses has made it difficult to determine what happened.
