Darryl Garrett, aged 51, was killed on October 16, 2017, in Houston, Texas, during a violent incident that took place at a north Houston nightclub. Garrett was working an extra security job alongside two other Harris County Precinct 4 constable deputies when they were ambushed. The shooting occurred around the early hours at the 45 Norte Bar and Lounge, where the deputies were providing security. Garrett, along with Deputy Juqaim Barthen, was injured, while Deputy Kareem Atkins was fatally shot. Garrett sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the back and underwent surgery.
The shooter fled the scene in what authorities later described as an act of cowardice. Following the investigation, the Houston Police Department announced they had arrested a suspect linked to the shooting. However, the identity of the suspect had not been made public at the time of reporting. Garrett’s fiancée described the close bond between the three deputies, who were more like brothers than just colleagues. Nearly two months after the shooting, Garrett remained hospitalized, continuing his recovery after the severe injuries.
