Three beloved individuals are murdered during the commission of a robbery in South Carolina In the quiet city of Greer, South Carolina, a tragic event unfolded on May 16, 2003, that left the community in shock and a family forever changed. Sylvia Sudduth Holtzclaw, a 56-year-old White female, was working as a bank manager at the Blue Ridge Savings and Loan. That Friday afternoon, she was the only employee on duty. Her son, David, had brought her lunch earlier that day, a final, poignant memory before the unthinkable happened.
Around 1:30 p.m., a silent alarm was triggered at
the bank, indicating a robbery in progress. When dispatchers tried to call the bank, the phone was answered and then abruptly disconnected. Police arrived at the scene at approximately 1:45 p.m. to a chilling discovery. In a utility room, they found the bodies of Sylvia Holtzclaw and two customers, James Eb Barnes and his wife, Maggie Barnes. All three had been shot and killed.
The investigation that followed revealed that the victims were shot with a 40-caliber Glock pistol. The assailant or assailants had been in and out of the bank within a mere 15 minutes. Despite hundreds of tips over the years, the case grew cold. A possible lead emerged in the form of a red vehicle, potentially an Oldsmobile Alero or Chevrolet Impala, seen near the bank around the time of the murders, but the surveillance footage was too grainy to be of significant help.
A person of interest, Emerson Wright, was identified a year after the murders when he was found driving a stolen red Alero. Wright was wanted for other crimes and was known to use a Glock.
