In the early morning hours of a Wednesday on October 14, 2010 in South Philadelphia, the life of 22-year-old Hugo Mwagala was tragically cut short. As he was returning to his home near 19th and Reed Streets, he was accosted by a robber who demanded his wallet. The encounter escalated, and Mwagala was shot in the head on the very steps of the home he had been working to improve for his family. He was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his wound.

Hugo Mwagala, a contractor who had moved to the United States from Africa with his family eight years prior, was described by neighbors as a hard-working man dedicated to his family.
