On the final night of 2013, the life of 18-year-old Qhahdir Devine, a promising male high school basketball star, was cut short by gunfire in Philadelphia. Just before 11:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve, Devine was shot in the head and chest outside a donut shop on Girard Avenue near 7th Street. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead approximately 15 minutes later, becoming the city's last homicide victim of the year.
