Michael Stewart, a 25-year-old African-American man, died on September 28, 1983, after an encounter with New York City Transit Police. Stewart was an aspiring artist and model involved in the downtown art scene. On September 15, 1983, he was arrested for allegedly spray-painting graffiti at the First Avenue subway station. Witnesses reported that Stewart was beaten by officers during and after his arrest, including being struck with billy clubs and choked with a nightstick. He arrived at Bellevu ...
