In the West Philadelphia neighborhood, on the evening of September 18, 2016, a street argument escalated into gunfire, ending the life of 31-year-old Almir Alwyn. An African-American male, Alwyn was on the 5600 block of Media Street when a dispute broke out.
The heated exchange, which also involved Evans Bouknight, Jr. and another man named Abraham Camarra, quickly turned violent as shots were fired.
During the chaos, Alwyn was struck by a bullet and fell to the sidewalk, wounded but still alive. A witness at the scene then observed Evans Bouknight approach the fallen Alwyn. Standing directly over him, Bouknight fired a single, fatal shot to Alwyn's head before handing the weapon to his brother and fleeing the scene.
Police officers, flagged down by pedestrians, discovered Alwyn unresponsive on the sidewalk and bleeding from his head. Medics arrived shortly after and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Following an investigation into the shooting, Evans Bouknight was arrested and charged in connection with Alwyn's death. He was ultimately convicted of third-degree murder, as well as several firearms violations, including persons not to possess a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, and carrying a firearm on the streets of Philadelphia. An appeal of his conviction was later affirmed in a court decision dated March 7, 2025.
