Do you know who murdered Daniel? On September 29, 2007, Daniel C. “Chaz” Dudley, a 26-year-old Black male from Cincinnati, Ohio, was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in the Hartwell neighborhood. At approximately 4:10 a.m., while riding as a front-seat passenger in a vehicle driven by Douglas Davis, a white car pulled alongside and opened fire. Dudley was struck by the gunfire, and another passenger, Zain Hasan, sustained injuries.
Davis attempted to drive them to a hospital but encountered a Hamilton County Sheriff's deputy at a Speedway gas station at Galbraith and Pippin Roads. Emergency medical services transported both victims to University Hospital, where Daniel Dudley succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators believe that Daniel Dudley was not the intended target of the shooting. Prior to the incident, Dudley and his companions had visited Club Ritz, a local nightclub. Despite the passage of time, no arrests have been made in connection with his murder, and the case remains unsolved.
In the aftermath of her son's death, Hope Dudley became an advocate for victims of unsolved homicides. She founded the organization “U Can Speak For Me” to raise awareness and encourage community members to come forward with information. One of her initiatives includes distributing decks of playing cards to inmates, each card featuring a different unsolved homicide case; Daniel Dudley is featured on the five of hearts.
In 2024, the Cincinnati Police Department established a Cold Case Task Force in collaboration with the ATF, the Hamilton County Coroner's Office, and the Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office. This task force aims to leverage new technologies and resources to revisit unsolved cases like that of Daniel Dudley. Despite these efforts, his case remains open, and authorities continue to seek information from the public.
