On May 14, 2012, 25-year-old Marvin Gates was fatally shot in broad daylight in Evanston, Cincinnati. The shooting happened on St. Ledger Place, where witnesses reported seeing two gunmen wearing red scarves. Gates, who was actively participating in the Cincinnati Initiative to Reduce Violence (CIRV), had been working to leave behind his past life of crime, striving to set a better example for his young daughter, Ma'Riyah.
