Isiah T. Smith, a 19-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on May 20, 2012, in Lima, Ohio. The incident occurred at approximately 7:54 PM in the 1300 block of West High Street near the intersection of Rosedale Avenue. According to reports, Smith became involved in an altercation with several individuals, which ultimately led to his death. Law enforcement officials from the Lima Police Department responded to the scene and began their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the
shooting.
During the investigation, authorities uncovered details suggesting that the fatal shooting may have stemmed from a drug-related dispute. Testimony from Lima Police Detective Kent Miller indicated that an 18-year-old suspect, identified as Porter, had arranged a drug deal involving multiple individuals. As the transaction was taking place, Smith allegedly pulled a firearm, leading to a violent struggle. Another individual, Santario Simpson, a 35-year-old Lima resident, attempted to overpower Smith, resulting in a chaotic confrontation. During the struggle, Simpson sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, and Smith was knocked to the ground.
Witnesses reported seeing Porter standing over Smith with a firearm before firing multiple shots, some of which struck Smith in the face. The testimony presented during a preliminary hearing in Lima Municipal Court led Magistrate David Cheney to determine that there was sufficient evidence to link Porter to a potential crime. Consequently, the case was forwarded to the grand jury for further consideration. Authorities recovered a bullet from Smith’s body, which was set to be compared with a firearm found near the scene.
The Lima Police Department continued to seek additional information regarding the case, urging anyone with relevant details to come forward. The investigation remained ongoing as officials worked to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting and whether self-defense claims would play a role in the legal proceedings.
