Marco Esparza, a 16-year-old Oakland resident, was shot and killed on July 18, 2009, while attending an illegal car rally, commonly known as a sideshow. The event, a frequent gathering spot for local youth, turned deadly when gunfire erupted, leaving Esparza fatally wounded. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Esparza succumbed to his injuries shortly after the shooting. His death shocked the community and highlighted the ongoing issue of violence at these unsanctioned events.
