On February 18, 2007, 17-year-old Travis Moore was shot and killed while attending a Sweet 16 birthday party at an apartment on Fernwood Drive in Charlotte, North Carolina. The party, which started as a celebration for a young girl, quickly spiraled out of control after the invitation spread on social media, attracting numerous uninvited guests, some of whom were from rival high schools.
As tensions rose during the event, a gun was fired into the crowd, tragically hitting Moore in the head while he danced in the living room.
Despite the chaos, police believe that Moore was not the intended target. Witnesses at the scene were hesitant to come forward initially, but authorities hope that those who were teens at the time may now be willing to share information as adults. Moore’s family, including his mother and sister, has made repeated public pleas for anyone with information to break their silence and help solve the case, which remains unsolved to this day. A reward is still offered for tips that could lead to an arrest.
This case remains an open investigation by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's cold case unit, and efforts continue to seek justice for Travis and closure for his family.
