On January 12, 2008, Eric Richard Byrd, a 21-year-old from Charlotte, North Carolina, was shot and killed during a robbery attempt. Byrd and three associates went to Lake Point Apartments on Point Lake Drive, intending to purchase marijuana. While there, one of Byrd's friends was confronted by an armed assailant, robbed, and led back to the car where Byrd and the others were waiting. When the men in the car refused to comply with the suspect's demands for money, they were shot.
Byrd died at the scene, while his associates were wounded but survived the attack.
This tragic incident took place in the parking lot of the apartment complex, and despite the passage of time, it remains an unsolved homicide. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department continues to investigate this case, offering a reward for information leading to an arrest. It is part of the department's ongoing cold case efforts.
