On May 25, 2014, 25-year-old Juan Carlos Ruiz was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in Durham, North Carolina. The shooting occurred on Holloway Street, and the car Ruiz was in crashed into the side of a house. Durham police quickly launched an investigation, which led to the arrest of a suspect, who was charged with murder shortly after the incident. The case was one of several violent events in the city that year, drawing attention to ongoing concerns about gun violence in Durham.
