A woman on the way to see her boyfriend disappears On the evening of July 1, 1989, 32-year-old Caucasian female Pamela Webb left a family gathering in Winthrop, Maine, to drive to her boyfriend's home in Mason, New Hampshire. The trip was one she had made numerous times before. She was driving her 1981 blue Chevrolet pickup truck with her dog, Thumper, beside her. At 9:52 p.m., a turnpike ticket showed she entered the Maine Turnpike in Augusta.
This would be the last time her movements could be definitively tracked.
Sometime later that night, Webb's truck was found abandoned in the southbound lane of I-95 in Biddeford, Maine. The vehicle had a flat passenger-side rear tire, and a spare tire was leaning against the tailgate. Ominously, there were signs of a struggle near the truck, including bloodstains on the pavement. Inside the pickup, her personal belongings, including her purse and Bible, were untouched. Her dog, Thumper, was found unharmed inside the vehicle. Her boyfriend reported her missing the following morning, July 2, 1989, when she failed to arrive at his home.
For seventeen days, Pamela Webb's whereabouts remained a mystery. Then, on July 18, 1989, her skeletal remains were discovered by construction workers in a wooded area off Route 3 in Franconia, New Hampshire, over 100 miles from where her truck had been found. The medical examiner determined that her death was a homicide caused by unspecified violence. Despite an extensive investigation that has spanned decades, no arrests have ever been made in her murder, and the case remains unsolved.
Over the years, investigators have looked into several individuals, but no suspect has ever been officially named. One person of interest was a Maine State Trooper who was fired for lying about when he first saw Webb's disabled truck on the side of the highway and for falsifying his report. He was eventually cleared as a suspect. Another individual, a truck driver suspected in other crimes against women in the region, was also investigated but ultimately ruled out as a suspect in Webb's murder.
