In the summer of 2017, the life of a 45-year-old Hispanic woman, Lizzette Schley, was tragically cut short in her Las Vegas home. On the morning of July 9th, neighbors on Rockcrest Drive were alarmed by the sounds of a woman screaming and struggling inside a nearby residence. Their concerned calls to 911 brought officers from the Metropolitan Police Department to the scene at approximately 9 a.m.
Upon their arrival, what they discovered was a grim scene.
Inside the home, they found Lizzette Schley deceased. An investigation immediately began, and the Clark County coroner's office would later determine that her death was a homicide caused by multiple sharp-force injuries. Investigators noted that there were no signs of forced entry into the residence, which initially led them to consider the possibility that the incident was domestic-related.
The investigation into Schley's murder soon led to a suspect. An 18-year-old man named Steven Olsen was identified and subsequently arrested. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of murder with a deadly weapon. Details from Olsen's arrest report revealed a chilling account of the events leading up to Schley's death. He informed detectives that he had met Schley online and that they had a brief affair. Despite an age gap that made him uninterested in a serious relationship, he accepted her invitation for breakfast on that fatal Sunday morning.
Olsen confessed to a premeditated and brutal plan. He admitted to police that his intention in going to her home was not for a social visit, but to rob and kill her. He arrived with a Bowie knife and latex gloves concealed in his backpack. During the visit, he excused himself to the bathroom where he put on the gloves. He then called Schley over to the partially opened door and launched a vicious attack, stabbing her in the stomach, head, and face, and slashing at her legs. The assault was interrupted by a knock at the door, which prompted Olsen to flee the scene with his belongings.
