In the quiet hours after Christmas in 2017, the lives of two people were tragically cut short behind a central-valley swap meet in Las Vegas. Alfred Wilhelm, a 53-year-old man, was shot and killed on December 26th in a violent encounter that also claimed the life of 27-year-old Rhonda Ballow. The circumstances of their deaths would later be pieced together through a chilling confession and witness accounts, revealing a motive rooted in a personal vendetta against sex offenders.
The investigation into the double homicide led police to 32-year-old Michael Thompson. According to court documents, Thompson confided in a neighbor, admitting to the killings. He allegedly told the neighbor that he killed Wilhelm because he was a sex offender. Nevada sex offender registry information confirmed that Wilhelm had a prior conviction for first-degree rape in Hawaii in 1984. Thompson reportedly killed Ballow because she refused to leave the scene. Initially, the neighbor did not believe Thompson's confession due to his substance use.
Witnesses to the shooting also pointed detectives toward Thompson. One person reported seeing a man matching Thompson’s description shoot Wilhelm twice. This witness fled after the initial shots and heard more gunfire. Roughly 45 minutes later, the witness returned to find Ballow crawling on a loading dock ramp, asking for help, apparently unaware she had also been shot. This witness did not call for help. Police first spoke with Thompson on January 5, 2018, after a witness spotted him in a convenience store. At that time, he denied having any information and declined to provide a DNA sample. Following further investigation, authorities arrested Thompson in January 2018, and prosecutors charged him with two counts of murder.
