In the early moments of August 13, 2015, in St. Louis, Missouri, a young mother's life was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. Whitney Brown, a 24-year-old woman, was standing by a parked car in the 6000 block of Shulte Avenue when a vehicle drove by and its occupants opened fire. Brown was struck in the torso and later died from her injuries.
Also killed in the shooting was 28-year-old Devon Fletcher, who was shot in the abdomen.
The shooting, which occurred at approximately 12:15 AM, unfolded as a group of people were gathered and hanging out in the area. Witnesses reported that a gold or tan Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was seen traveling east on Shulte before the occupants began shooting. After the barrage of gunfire, the truck fled the scene. Investigators believe that Brown and Fletcher were not the intended targets of the shooting. Tragically, Whitney Brown's 5-year-old son was in the backseat of her car and witnessed the horrific event.
In the decade that has passed since the double homicide, no arrests have been made, and the case officially remains unsolved. The pain and lack of closure have been a heavy burden for Brown's family. Her mother, Erica Jones, has become a vocal advocate for families of homicide victims, founding a support group called Voice of the Voiceless.
