In the early morning hours of August 21, 2012, the life of Venesee Lawrence Johnson, a 25-year-old African-American man, was tragically cut short on a street in south Minneapolis. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later confirmed that Johnson died from multiple gunshot wounds in what was ruled a homicide. He was a resident of north Minneapolis, and his death left a family searching for answers in a case that has since grown cold.
At approximately 6:45 a.m., the stillness of the neighborhood around the 2100 block of Oakland Avenue South was broken by the sound of gunfire. The city's ShotSpotter system detected the shots, prompting a police response to the area. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Johnson inside a van, having already succumbed to his injuries. He was officially pronounced dead shortly after 7 a.m.
