Qingjun Sun, a 56-year-old male acupuncturist, was fatally shot outside his home in East Oakland, California, on the evening of December 11, 2012. The incident occurred around 8:40 p.m. in the 800 block of Hawkins Drive, a relatively new housing development situated in an industrial area near the Oakland Coliseum. Authorities believe Sun had just arrived home from work when he was attacked.
His residence, which he shared with his wife, was part of a community known as Arcadia Park, which had generally been free of major crime, though some violent incidents had been reported in the preceding weeks.
Neighbors described Sun and his wife as friendly and approachable, often seen walking their mastiff dog named Tiger in the neighborhood. Sun was well known in the community for his work as an acupuncturist, and some residents believed he had a grown son who did not live with them. The sudden and violent nature of his death left the neighborhood in shock, with residents expressing their sadness and concern over the incident.
At the time of the investigation, police had not identified a motive for the killing, and no arrests had been made. Authorities were actively seeking information from the public, offering a reward of up to $10,000 for tips leading to the arrest of Sun’s killer. Sun’s death marked Oakland’s 121st homicide of the year, surpassing the total number of homicides recorded in the city in 2011. The case remained open as investigators worked to uncover leads and determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
