In the summer of 2012, a promising young man's life was tragically cut short in Detroit. Wyman Shaver, a 23-year-old male who was actively pursuing a career in nursing, was fatally shot on July 12th of that year. He was the victim of a carjacking that took a violent turn in the parking lot of the Olympia Coney Island.
The incident unfolded when two teenagers approached Wyman with the intent of stealing his 2004 Range Rover.
During the confrontation, he was ordered out of his vehicle and then shot in the chest. The wound proved to be fatal, ending the life of a young man his family described as hardworking and dedicated. His sister lamented that he had worked for years to be able to afford the vehicle that was ultimately the cause of his demise.
Shortly after the deadly encounter, authorities were able to locate and apprehend two suspects in connection with the crime. Jerome Newell, 19, and Anthony Shell, 18, were found in a garage where the stolen Range Rover was also recovered. The two teenagers were subsequently charged with a range of serious offenses, including homicide and arson, bringing a swift, though somber, development to the case for a grieving family and community.
