In the fall of 2023, the life of 57-year-old William Wilson, an inmate at the Lakeland Correctional Facility, came to an unexpected and tragic end. On October 29, Wilson was discovered deceased in a bathroom within the prison, with no initial obvious cause of death. An autopsy would later unravel the mystery, revealing a fatal overdose of methamphetamine. Investigators found broken and unbroken balloons inside his body, indicating a desperate attempt to regurgitate the smuggled narcotics had gone horribly wrong.
The investigation into his death quickly focused on a visit he had received just two days prior. Security footage revealed that a 24-year-old woman from Detroit had passed a small object to Wilson, which he was then seen swallowing. This woman was identified as Dezaray Shenique Brown-Bobo. The object was later determined to be balloons filled with methamphetamine. The cause of Wilson's death was officially ruled as methamphetamine toxicity, which occurred when the balloons burst inside him.
In the months that followed, the legal consequences of the smuggling operation began to unfold. Dezaray Shenique Brown-Bobo was arrested in Detroit on March 4 and transported to the Branch County Jail. She was charged with multiple felonies, including delivery of a controlled substance causing death. On July 8, Brown-Bobo entered a guilty plea to a charge of delivery of a controlled substance. In exchange for her plea, prosecutors dropped the more severe charges of delivering a controlled substance causing death and bringing contraband into a prison.
The investigation did not end with Brown-Bobo's arrest. Authorities identified additional individuals involved in the plot to smuggle drugs into the correctional facility. This led to the arrests of 30-year-old Lakeland Correctional Facility inmate Evellis McGee and 24-year-old Aaliyah Monet Lent of Saginaw. McGee was arrested on July 30, and Lent was apprehended in Detroit on August 2. Both were charged with conspiracy to furnish contraband to a prisoner. At the time of his death, William Wilson was serving a life sentence following a 1998 conviction for charges including assault with intent to commit murder and armed robbery. Evellis McGee was also serving a sentence for a 2014 second-degree murder conviction.
