Kevin Brown, a 22-year-old man, was drawn into what prosecutors described as a setup that began like an ordinary night and ended in violence. In December 2011, he was lured to the Clemens Court Apartments in Clinton Township under the pretext of taking Renyatta Hamilton out on a date, only to be ambushed by Larry Stewart in what authorities said was an armed robbery plan.
The encounter turned into a struggle, and Brown was shot four times.
He was left critically wounded and later died from those injuries, turning the planned robbery into a homicide that rippled outward—from the apartment complex where the shots were fired to the grieving family he never came home to.
The case moved through the courts over the months that followed. A jury found Stewart and Hamilton guilty of first-degree murder, felony firearm, armed robbery, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and the convictions set the stage for sentencing that autumn.
On September 19, 2012, a Macomb County Circuit Court judge sentenced both Stewart and Hamilton to life in prison without parole. Court records referenced in the reporting also reflected additional prison time tied to the robbery counts, orders barring contact with Brown's family and with each other, and restitution totaling $6,300.
