In the early hours of March 3, 2002, a night of dancing and socializing in Hamtramck, a city enclave within Detroit, spiraled into deadly violence. A large brawl erupted inside a local dance hall, spilling out into the street. Amid the chaos, shots were fired, and when the pandemonium subsided, one man lay dead and three others were wounded. The deceased was identified as Carlos Davis.
The investigation into the shooting quickly focused on identifying the person responsible. Police interviewed numerous witnesses who were present during the altercation. Two individuals, Robert Richards and Damon Ramsuer, came forward with crucial information, both claiming to have seen the shooter. Investigators presented them with photographs that had been taken by a hired photographer at the party before the fight broke out. Both Richards and Ramsuer independently identified William Deshun Johnson from these photos as the man who had fired the shots.
Based on these identifications, William Deshun Johnson was arrested and charged with the murder of Carlos Davis and the assault of the three other wounded individuals. During legal proceedings, the testimony of the witnesses became a central point. Tragically, Robert Richards was killed before he could testify at Johnson's trial. However, his sworn testimony from the preliminary examination, where he had identified Johnson, was read to the jury. Damon Ramsuer, when he took the stand at trial, recanted his initial statement to the police and denied having seen the shooter.
Despite the challenges with witness testimony, the prosecution presented its case, relying on the strength of the initial photographic identifications and Richards' preliminary examination testimony. The jury found William Deshun Johnson guilty of second-degree murder for the death of Carlos Davis, as well as three counts of assault with intent to commit murder. He was subsequently sentenced to a lengthy prison term, receiving thirty-five to sixty years for the murder conviction, to be served after a two-year sentence for a felony firearm conviction. He also received concurrent sentences of twenty to forty years for each of the assault convictions.
