A young woman is hit by a car while riding her bicycle after her shift at a bar
In the early morning hours of July 5, 2013, the life of 29-year-old Kelly Boyce-Hurlbert was tragically cut short in what has become a long-unsolved hit-and-run case in Traverse City, Michigan. A newlywed, Boyce-Hurlbert was riding her bicycle home from her job at North Peak Brewing Company, a familiar five-minute journey. Her husband, Paul, was packing up his band's equipment at a pub located below the brewery where he had just finished a performance.
Shortly before 2:00 a.m., as she pedaled along Washington Street, a large, dark-colored vehicle, possibly a pick-up truck or SUV, struck Boyce-Hurlbert. The impact was severe, and she became trapped under the vehicle, which then dragged her and her bicycle for approximately a block and a half. Residents in the area were awakened by her screams. The driver of the vehicle did not stop to render aid and fled the scene, leaving Boyce-Hurlbert grievously injured in the road. A concerned neighbor promptly called 9-1-1.
First responders arrived to find Boyce-Hurlbert in critical condition and rushed her to Munson Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she succumbed to her injuries. The incident launched a comprehensive investigation involving the Traverse City Police Department, Michigan State Police, and the FBI. Over the years, law enforcement has pursued more than 800 leads, yet the driver responsible for her death has never been identified, and no arrests have been made.
The case remains an open and active investigation. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individual responsible for Kelly Boyce-Hurlbert's death. Her family, along with law enforcement, continues to appeal to the public for any information that might bring closure and justice for Kelly. They believe that the person responsible may have confided in someone over the years and hope that their conscience, or the incentive of the reward, will finally bring the truth to light.
