Eric and his beloved dog Gypsy were found murdered behind the old Empire School in Empire, Alabama, a small town in Walker County
On March 21, 2015, the charred remains of 32-year-old white male Eric Cates and his dog, Gypsy, were discovered inside his burned pickup truck behind the old Empire School in Empire, Alabama. The discovery was made by hunters who stumbled upon the vehicle in a wooded area. The bodies were severely burned, and the interior of the truck was extensively damaged by fire. This gruesome scene marked the beginning of a prolonged and complex investigation into Cates' death.
