They said that in the darkness, Thomas likely walked right off a ledge that had no protective railing, plunging into the water below. One friend recounted calling out to him as he suddenly dropped and never resurfaced. The search for Thomas was an hours-long ordeal, with boaters and rescue crews combing through the thick seaweed that is believed to have entangled him and prevented him from coming back to the surface.
