In the pre-dawn hours of September 20, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a Detroit parking lot, claiming the life of off-duty Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy Devante Jones. The 23-year-old was dropping someone off near the Chrysler Service Drive and East Forest Avenue when his vehicle was riddled with bullets. Despite his attempt to flee the ambush, Jones sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The brazen attack on a member of law enforcement sparked an intensive and multi-state investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
The subsequent investigation, described by Detroit Police Chief James White as 'quite complex' and 'very layered,' led authorities across state lines. On October 7, 2021, a coordinated effort involving nine search warrants executed in Michigan, Ohio, and Georgia resulted in the arrest of four suspects. The men, all from Detroit, were identified as Malikk Cameron Williams, 22, Gregory Freeman, 19, Christion Bernard White, 22, and Kevin Bernard White, 27. The arrests were a significant breakthrough in a case that had shaken the local law enforcement community.
Prosecutors alleged that the shooting was not a random act of violence. Text messages exchanged between the suspects and Deputy Jones revealed a prior dispute, with the defendants reportedly questioning Jones's manhood and daring him to confront them. According to the prosecution, when Jones arrived at the location, the men opened fire on his vehicle. All four men were charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of felony firearm. Following their arrests, Williams, Freeman, and Kevin White were arraigned in December 2021, while Christion White, who was apprehended later, had his arraignment at the end of that month.
