A tense situation unfolded in Detroit, culminating in the death of 54-year-old David White. Considered 'armed and extremely dangerous' by law enforcement, White became the subject of a police standoff that lasted nearly four hours on the city's southwest side. The events leading to the confrontation began when White, after taking a handgun from his father's residence, allegedly forced his 86-year-old neighbor to drive him to Detroit for the purpose of purchasing drugs.

White had the woman drop him off near the border of Clinton Township and Roseville before he returned to Detroit and rented a room. The landlord of the property recognized White from a television news report indicating he was wanted in connection with a kidnapping and robbery in St. Clair County. The landlord promptly alerted the authorities, which led to police descending on the location.
As officers surrounded the home, the standoff ensued. Ultimately, the Detroit Police Department's special response team made entry into the residence. Inside, they discovered White suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. His death brought an end to the immediate threat, and the investigation into the initial kidnapping and robbery continued.
