On the night of August 31, 2011, Anthony Worrell, a 28-year-old African-American man from Roxbury, was fatally shot in Charlestown. The incident occurred at approximately 10:46 p.m. within the Bunker Hill Housing Development. Officers responding to reports of a person shot found Worrell being attended to by emergency medical technicians. He was suffering from life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting took place
in a neighborhood that had been affected by violence, with Worrell's death marking the second fatal shooting in the area in a matter of months. In the days following the incident, a makeshift memorial with stuffed animals, candles, photographs, and bottles of Corona was created by neighbors in the housing development to remember him.
The Boston Police Homicide Unit immediately launched an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. At the time, authorities did not release many details about the case and made public appeals for information.
