Deputy Marshal J. W. Dees, a 30-year-old white male, was tragically killed on May 19, 1906, in Lenox, Georgia. He was attempting to arrest a suspect wanted for a double murder in Tifton. The suspect, who had previously been apprehended by the town marshal, managed to escape custody by pulling out a concealed handgun.
