On June 25, 2015, 24-year-old Anthony "Major" Surrell was shot and killed in East Oakland. The shooting occurred around 9:25 p.m. on the 3500 block of 68th Avenue, near Surrell's home. He was standing on the street when an unknown assailant opened fire. Surrell was rushed to Highland Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries approximately 30 minutes later. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and as of the last reports, no suspects had been identified or apprehended. His death is part of a troubling pattern of unsolved homicides in Oakland.
