In 2014, the life of a 10-year-old Black or African American boy named Damaud Martin came to a tragic end. His death on July 2nd of that year was not the result of a sudden event, but rather the final chapter of a story that began six years earlier. At the time of his passing, Damaud was living in a monitored group home in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, a consequence of the severe injuries he had sustained as a toddler.
The chain of events that would ultimately lead to Damaud's death was
set in motion in 2008. At the age of three, while on the top bunk of a bed, his mother, Tamekia Martin, slapped him. The blow caused the young boy to fall and strike his head on a television stand. The impact resulted in a traumatic brain injury that necessitated emergency surgery. Although he survived the immediate trauma, Damaud never fully recovered. He was left with cerebral palsy and required specialized care for the remainder of his life.
Following the 2008 incident, Tamekia Martin was convicted of child abuse in 2009 after entering an Alford plea. For years, Damaud lived with the consequences of that day, his condition necessitating placement in a group home. Then, in July 2014, caregivers found him unresponsive in his bed. Paramedics were called, but they were unable to revive him. The state medical examiner later ruled his death a homicide, directly linking it to the brain injuries he had suffered at the hands of his mother years before.
The homicide ruling prompted a renewed investigation into Tamekia Martin. During the investigation, she denied responsibility and provided inconsistent accounts of how her son was injured. However, a staff member from the group home told authorities they had overheard her apologizing to Damaud, saying, "I'm so sorry I hurt you." In March 2019, a jury found Tamekia Martin guilty of manslaughter and child abuse in the death of her son. She faced a potential sentence of 40 years in prison for her crimes.
