Kirk Butler, 45, was a Black man from Baltimore, Maryland, whose night ended in a burst of violence on Friday, September 11, 2015. Just before 10:00 p.m., gunfire cracked through the 2400 block of Barclay Street in East Baltimore, and when officers arrived they found Butler wounded by a gunshot.
He was rushed to Johns Hopkins Hospital, but he didn’t survive.
In the same incident, a 9-year-old girl was also hit—her injury described as a graze wound to the lower body—and she was taken for treatment and later released.
In the hours after the shooting, the scene stayed hazy: no clear motive, no public explanation for why the gunfire erupted there, and no names attached to the person—or people—who pulled the trigger. Police indicated Butler was believed to be the intended target, and accounts described a gunman, possibly two, approaching in the neighborhood before the shots were fired. Investigators circulated imagery and referenced CitiWatch camera footage from the area as they tried to piece together the moments leading up to the attack.
