On December 9, 2015, 17-year-old Miguel Alvarez was shot and killed in San Francisco. The incident took place in the early morning hours on Holladay Avenue, just outside the Mission District. Alvarez's friends rushed him to San Francisco General Hospital, but he later died from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. The police, alerted by the city’s gunshot detection system, SpotShotter, arrived after the victim had already been transported to the hospital.
Despite an investigation involving the Gang Task Force, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
Alvarez’s death was one of several homicides that shook the Mission District during that time, leading to heightened concerns about violence in the area. A memorial, including roses and prayer candles, was set up at 24th and Capp Streets, honoring Alvarez's life, though the memorial was located away from the crime scene.
