Melvin Johnson, a 39-year-old resident of Oakland, California, was killed on December 27, 2016, in East Oakland, not far from a street memorial for his son and grandson. This tragic incident marked the third generation of his family to fall victim to Oakland’s ongoing violence. In August 2013, Johnson's 20-year-old son, Andrew Thomas, and 16-month-old grandson, Drew Leon Deon Jackson, were killed while visiting Oakland for a birthday party.
