I've been thinking a lot about the students who were there that day at William Reed Elementary. They must have been so traumatized witnessing something so horrifying. We often focus on the adults in these terrible events (not that we shouldn’t), but those kids… I can’t imagine what they carried with them after seeing their teachers, Harriett Robson and Minnie McFerren, killed right in front of them. Did the school offer any sort of counseling or support back then? I'm not aware of what mental health services were available in 1960, but I hope those children somehow found ways to cope with such a shocking event. My heart goes out to all of them, especially now as adults who’ve had to live with these memories for over half a century. If anyone has more information on how the community helped those children afterward, I’d be interested to know.
