Hey everyone, it's incredibly tough to discuss this, but we're talking about Raymond Liggins today. Just 21 years old, he was shot on July 10, 2009, in the South Shore neighborhood. What caught my attention is just how reflective Raymond's tragedy is of the larger issues that were gripping Chicago back then. So many young lives were caught in the crossfire, and it often feels like each one represents a story unrealized. It's hard not to feel for his family, who must have been overwhelmed by the senselessness of it all.
It’s strange to think how much the community itself was struggling during this time—economic hardships, limited resources, and as a result, rampant gun violence. Does anyone here think there’s enough being done now that wasn’t back in 2009 to prevent things like this from happening again? It’s crushing to think about what's been lost, and even more, to think about all those who had to live in fear amid such violence. Keeping Raymond and his loved ones in my thoughts as we continue to discuss this important issue.
